Design software for architecture, engineering and construction has never been as advanced as it is today. The regulatory requirements implemented by public administrations have been linked to the development of programs that increasingly offer more and new possibilities for experts. Designs and calculations that were complex and even impossible years ago, are nowadays viable thanks to the improvements introduced by software development companies.

This evolution has facilitated and expanded the options of the designers, making it possible to carry out designs and calculations of great complexity in less time. Hence, allowing the designer to devote more time to creativity and to design more innovative works. Thanks to the use and implementation of new technologies, modern software is capable of making more precise calculations and models.

Increased modelling accuracy

Software has evolved to have a wide capacity to create precise models in an easy and intuitive way, acquiring the ability to model increasingly complex plans in a much simpler manner. This evolution has favored the work of designers, who have experienced greater flexibility in creativity and designing objects.

Development of specialized software

As previously stated, the regulations are increasingly demanding in the construction sector. The number of requirements and parameters to be taken into account are increasing in each of the areas involved in the design and calculation of a building; thermal analysis, acoustics, structures, lighting, installations, energy efficiency, ... There are so many parameters to be considered that technicians in each field require specialist software.

Therefore, software companies have opted for the development of highly specialized programs focused on designing and calculating specific aspects within a construction project.

Adaptation to Open BIM technology: Easy to share information

Related to the previous point, projects increasingly require the intervention of more professionals and different areas of specialization. Until recently, each of the technicians conducted their work with their own software, generating a series of formats or files that they had to share with the rest of the team. This created problems when sharing information with each other since different software gave rise to files that, in some cases, were not compatible with others.

At present, the popularization of Open BIM technology and working with standard and open formats is minimizing these problems, since software allows the export and import of files in open formats, such as IFC. This facilitates the exchange of data, without information losses and making collaboration faster and more efficient.

Information Integration. Working with digital models

Documentation and information management is now much simpler and more comprehensive. Thanks to digital models, the different softwares work in the same language with standard formats avoiding fragmentation of project information.

In this way, a project can include different IFC files generated by the different software used by specialists. These files, in turn, can assign information added through links such as plans (DXF); measurements and budgets (BC3); documents and reports (PDF); photographs and renders; 3D models or efforts obtained from structural analysis (GLTF); point clouds generated by a laser scanner and many more.

In this way, all project information is integrated into a single space. Users find it easier to manage the information since the entire project team has the most current information in a central location: the digital model.

Enhanced Display

The advances in this field have been the most important and impressive. At present, the software has incorporated technology that allows the creation and visualization of extremely realistic models and projects. With this investment in visualization, technical details can be easily explained. Therefore it is now possible to use various views and to see in detail materials or lighting conditions, among other aspects of the project.

Therefore, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality are resources that have arrived gradually but are here to stay. They are being used to show the project in its physical environment, improving the utilization of products and having an important impact on the sales and marketing of projects. In addition, these solutions innovatively minimize errors in the inspection stage of the work.
